Understanding Ghost Fishing Nets

  • What are Ghost Nets?

Ghost Nets are lost or abandoned commercial fishing nets that drift aimlessly in the ocean, continuing to trap marine life, collect debris, causing significant harm to marine ecosystems.

  • Impact on Marine Life

Every year, over 700,000 marine animals- ranging from small crustaceans to large mammals- are needlessly injured or killed by ghost fishing nets. These abdanoned nets also damage vital ocean habitats by tangling with coral, algae, and other marione ecosystems, all while releasing harmful microplastics into our waters.

  • How Many Ghost Nets are there?

Every year, up to 1,000,000 tons of ghost nets pollute our oceans, contributing to the formation of five massive plastic vortexes, also known as "garbage patches," around the globe. The largest of these, located in the North Pacific Ocean between California and Hawaii, is twice the size of Texas. Shockingly ghost nets and fishing gear make up 46% of the patch's debris.

The Bracenet Solution

Working with NGO's

Recover & Prevent

We partner with Healthy Seas and have relationships with Ghost Diving and Sea Sheperd to recover ghost nets, in perilous missions from our oceans and seas. We also buy damaged nets from fishermen to prevent them from turning into ghost nets.

We utilize environmental neutral practices

Sort & Clean

We carefully sort through rescued ghost nets to find those suitable for Bracenet. Once selected, the nets are cleaned using our partners' environmentally friendly process, revealing the vibrant colors that make them truly unique.
